Thingvellir national park was designated by a special law on the protection of the area, passed by the alþing on 7th may, 1928. In terms of geology, it is a series of fissures in the earth's crust. Þingvellir is now a national park in the municipality of bláskógabyggð in southwestern iceland.

The parliamentary plains are the most important historic site of the country. It has been a national park in iceland since 1930 and was named a world heritage site by unesco in 2004.
